Landsmål comes from two Norwegian parts, land ('land' or 'countryside') and mål ('speech' or 'language'), so it means 'language of the land'. It was a written form based on rural dialects and was later renamed Nynorsk ('new Norwegian'), which explains why Landsmål refers to the country's countryside speech.
