Etymology

Kirgizstan is made of two parts: Kirgiz (the name of the people) and -stan which means 'land'. A helpful way to remember Kirgiz is that it comes from a Turkic word for 'forty' — one popular story says it refers to 'forty' tribes who joined, so Kirgizstan means the 'land of the Kyrgyz people'.
