Etymology
Karelia comes from the people who lived there, the Karelians, and from the Finnish name Karjala, which basically means 'land of the Karelians'. A helpful way to remember it is to think of England as the 'land of the Angles'—so Karelia is the homeland of the Karelian people between Finland and Russia.
