Etymology
Hispania was the old Roman name for the land we now call Spain and Portugal, and it is the source of the modern name Spain. One popular story says the name came from a Phoenician phrase like i-shphanim meaning 'land of rabbits', so people remembered the place by the animals they saw there and the name came to mean that whole region.
