Etymology

Flacourtia comes from the name of a French governor, Étienne de Flacourt, who studied plants in Madagascar long ago. Plant scientists later used his name for a group of tropical, often spiny trees and shrubs, so Flacourtia now points to these fruit-bearing tropical plants.
