Etymology
The name Federal Republic of Germany is a simple description: federal means many smaller states join together and republic means the country is run by elected leaders, not a king. After World War II these western German states were joined under that system, and when East and West reunited in 1990 the name came to mean 'a united country of states with an elected government'.
