This is a specialized technical term where 'DIP' is an acronym/label (dual in-line package) rather than a transparent lexical modifier; the electronics-specific sense of a small grouped configuration switch cannot be derived from the ordinary meanings of 'dip' + 'switch'. Even if a learner knows 'switch', the acronym/technical nature of 'DIP' makes the compound unpredictable for a B1 learner without prior exposure.
Etymology
DIP switch gets its name from a small block of switches made with two rows of metal pins; DIP stands for 'dual in-line', meaning the two lines of pins, and switch is the tiny on/off control, so the name points to its shape and use. That's why a DIP switch means a tiny switch you set by hand on electronic boards to choose options.
