Etymology

The word Cypripedium comes from Greek parts Cypris, a name for the goddess of love linked to Cyprus, and pedilon 'slipper', so it literally means 'Cypris's slipper'. That's why these orchids are called lady's slippers and have a pouch shaped like a small shoe.
