Morphology

cape + town

The name 'Cape Town' is compositionally transparent: it literally combines 'cape' (a headland into the sea) and 'town' (a settlement), so a learner who knows both words can infer it is a town located on or near a cape. Toponymic constructions of this sort are common cross-linguistically, making the meaning immediately comprehensible rather than idiomatic or metaphorical.

Etymology

Cape Town comes from being the town by a cape, a piece of land that sticks out into the sea, called the 'Cape of Good Hope'. So the name simply means the town at that cape.
