Etymology

Callirhoe comes from a Greek name that means 'beautiful stream', from calli- 'beautiful' and -rhoe 'flow'. The calli- part is the same idea as in calligraphy ('beautiful writing'), and the name fits the plant because its bright red or purple flowers can look like a flowing carpet of color.
