Morphology
Bitis + gabonica
The binomial name is partially compositional: if a learner knows 'Bitis' is a viper genus and recognises 'gabonica' as relating to Gabon, they can infer this refers to a species of Bitis likely from that region. However, the Latinized species epithet and the specific descriptive traits (large, heavy-bodied, brilliantly marked, highly venomous) are not predictable from the parts alone, so the relation is only partially transparent to learners.
Etymology
Bitis gabonica comes from old animal naming: Bitis was used for certain 'vipers' and gabonica points to the country 'Gabon'. So the name literally says 'viper from Gabon', which helps you remember it is a large, heavy, venomous West African snake.
