Bhutan probably comes from an old name for the Tibetan area, Bhot, which means 'Tibet' or 'land near Tibet'. A helpful way to remember the country is its own name Druk Yul, 'Land of the Thunder Dragon', and the high, stormy mountains, so the name points to its Himalayan location and dramatic landscape.
