The compound is directly compositional: 'wrongful' (caused by wrongdoing or unlawful conduct) + 'death' (end of life) yields a death caused by someone else's wrongful act. While used as a legal term in lawsuits, the basic meaning is predictable from the constituents and has clear parallels in other languages, so a B1 learner who knows the words will generally understand it.
Etymology
Wrongful death joins wrongful (a harmful or careless act) and death to give a clear picture: someone died because another person did something wrong. That's why it means a death 'caused by another's wrong act' and is used when the family can 'file a lawsuit' to get money.
