Morphology

word + class

The meaning 'a category of words' is directly and transparently derived from combining 'word' (a unit of language) with 'class' (a category or group). This noun+noun composition expressing a category of items is common in English and in many other languages, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents will readily infer the MWE's meaning.

Etymology

Word class is like a school idea: imagine words as students put into different classes by the 'job' they do in a sentence. So word class means a 'group' of words that share the same job in grammar.
