Morphology

Formed regularly from the verb 'vulcanize' with -ed, but the verb itself is specialized and derived from the proper name 'Vulcan', so learners may not infer the chemical process from the base.

Etymology

Vulcanized comes from Vulcan, the Roman god of 'fire' and metalwork. A helpful image is Vulcan's heat: rubber is treated with heat and sulfur to become 'stronger' and more elastic, so 'vulcanized' rubber is rubber made tougher by heat.
