The structure ultra- + filtration is clear, but the specialized technical meaning is only partly predictable from the parts.
Etymology
Ultrafiltration combines the prefix ultra- meaning 'beyond' with filter meaning 'to remove unwanted parts'. So ultrafiltration is like a 'beyond' or extra-fine filter that removes very small particles from a liquid.
