Etymology

Trivial comes from the Latin trivium, a place where 'three' (tri-) 'roads' (via) meet — a busy crossroads where ordinary people met. Because it meant 'common' or 'ordinary', trivial came to mean 'not important' or 'of little value', which is how we use it today.
