The meaning can be inferred from 'tri-' (three) + the familiar adjective 'annual' (yearly), but the bound element '-ennial' and irregular spelling make the morphological link less obvious to many learners.
Etymology
Triennial comes from tri- 'three' and ann- 'year', the same tri- you see in triangle and the same ann- in annual, so it means 'every three years' or 'lasting three years'.
