Morphology

trend-setter = trend + setter (transparent) = trend + setter

The morphology is the same compound 'trend' + 'setter'; although applied metaphorically to non-human agents, the formation is still directly interpretable.

Etymology

The word trend-setter can also mean a system or algorithm that starts new trends online. trend means 'a direction or popular movement' and set means 'to put in place', so when an app or algorithm promotes a song or style widely it acts as a trend-setter by putting that trend in front of many people.
