The adjective is built regularly from 'transformation', but the sense 'causing or resulting in major change or improvement' is a somewhat extended evaluation of that base meaning.
Etymology
Transformational comes from the Latin word transformare, made of trans- 'across' and form 'shape'. Think of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly — a clear image of a big change — so something transformational causes a major change or improvement.
