Historically linked to 'turpentine' and formed with the chemical combining form '-ene', but the class name is a specialized chemical term not transparently inferable by an average learner.
Etymology
Terpene comes from the same root as turpentine, the sticky tree substance once called 'resin'. So terpene means the smelly chemicals in plants, the parts that give essential oils and resins their scent.
