Etymology
Taping comes from tape, a long thin ribbon you know from sticky tape or a measuring tape, plus the ending -ing which means 'the action of'. When machines used magnetic tape to store sound or pictures, 'taping' became the act of making a recording, so a taping is a recording made on that tape.
