Etymology

Stroganoff is named after a rich Russian family, Stroganov, sometimes spelled Stroganoff, who made popular a dish of meat cooked quickly in a pan in a creamy sauce, so the name is like 'the Stroganov family's style'. That's why stroganoff now means meat cooked in a creamy sauce, often served with noodles or rice.
