Stabile also comes from the Latin stabilis, from stare meaning 'to stand', so it means 'not moving' or 'standing firm'. A helpful way to remember it is to think of a 'mobile' (a moving sculpture); a stabile is the opposite, a sculpture fixed on a base that 'stands' still.
