Morphology

spondylitis = spondyl + itis

Formed from the medical combining form 'spondyl-' (vertebra) + the medical suffix '-itis' (inflammation); this construction is not transparent to an average B1 learner unfamiliar with medical morphemes.

Etymology

The word spondylitis comes from the Greek parts spondyl- meaning 'spine bone' and -itis meaning 'inflammation'. So, spondylitis means 'inflammation of the spine', which is why it causes pain and stiffness in the back.
