Surface Forms

sobriety singular
sobrieties plural

Morphology

sobriety = sober (semi-transparent) = sober + ity

Derived from 'sober' but the abstract meaning 'quality of seriousness' is a metaphorical extension rather than a literal state of not drinking.

Etymology

Sobriety also means being serious and calm in behaviour. It comes from the same root as sober and the Latin sobrius 'not drunk', and because a person who is not drunk is calm and sensible, sobriety can mean 'seriousness' or a calm, sensible manner.
