Scrunchie comes from the word scrunch ('to squeeze' or 'crush') and the friendly ending -ie ('small' or 'cute'). A scrunchie is a hairband with fabric 'scrunched' around elastic, so it looks puffy and is gentle on hair, which is why we call it a scrunchie.
