Etymology
Scramjet comes from the engine name scram (short for supersonic combustion ramjet) plus the familiar jet. So, a scramjet is a jet engine that burns fuel while the air goes 'faster than sound', which is why it only works at very high speeds. A helpful way to remember it is to imagine a jet so fast it makes everything 'scram'.
