The phrase is compositionally formed: 'sample' modifies 'standard deviation', so a learner can infer it refers to the standard deviation computed from a sample rather than a whole population. However, 'standard deviation' is a technical statistical concept whose precise meaning (a measure of spread/average distance from the mean and its calculation) is not fully predictable from everyday senses of 'standard' and 'deviation', so some domain knowledge is needed.

Etymology

Sample standard deviation comes from the idea of measuring how much a small sample differs so you can 'estimate' the whole group. Imagine tasting a few spoonfuls of soup: the differences between those spoonfuls give the standard deviation, and we make a small correction so that number better guesses 'how spread out' the whole pot is.
