Morphology
rhinosinusitis = sinusitis (semi-transparent) = rhino + sinus + itis
The term is formed by adding the medical combining form 'rhino-' to the established medical word 'sinusitis'; the elements are transparent to medically informed readers but 'rhino-' and '-itis' are specialized and may be unfamiliar to average learners.
Etymology
The word rhinosinusitis breaks into parts: rhino- meaning 'nose' (seen in rhinoceros), sinus meaning 'a hollow or cavity', and -itis meaning 'inflammation' (seen in tonsillitis). So rhinosinusitis means 'inflammation of the nose and sinuses', which explains the congestion and facial pain people feel.
