Morphology

rewritable = rewrite (transparent) = re + write + able

In digital-storage use, 'rewritable' straightforwardly means 'able to be written on again' from the verb 'rewrite'.

Etymology

Rewritable is made of re- 'again', write, and -able 'able to be'. That is why we call a CD or memory card rewritable when you can erase it and record new data many times.
