Retarded comes from old Latin parts re- 'back' and tardus 'slow', and it is related to the everyday word tardy 'late', so it originally meant 'made slow' or 'delayed'. Because of that meaning, doctors once used the word to describe people with slow development, but today retarded is considered offensive and outdated, so use kinder terms like 'intellectual disability' instead.
