Morphology
reply = ply (opaque) = re + ply
Although the form looks like re- plus ply, the modern sense 'to answer' is not compositionally predictable from the current meaning of 'ply'.
Etymology
Reply The word reply comes from an old idea of saying something 'back' to someone: the re- part means 'back' and the ply part comes from a root meaning 'fold' or 'turn'. So a reply is words 'turned back' to someone, which is why it means an answer or response.
