Etymology
Redshirt originally comes from college sport where a player would wear a red shirt to show they would 'sit out' a season and save an extra year of eligibility. In stories and TV, redshirt later became a name for a small, expendable character who often 'dies' early because crew members in red shirts were the ones who kept getting killed.
