Morphology

recension = recens + ion

Borrowed as a Latinate nominalization (recens + -ion) where the base 'recens' is not a productive or familiar English word, so learners cannot reliably derive the meaning from parts.

Etymology

Recension comes from the Latin recensio and recensere, which meant 'to review' or 'judge again', with re- meaning 'again' and censere meaning 'to judge'. So a recension is a version of a text made after careful review or editing.
