Etymology
The word pyrobitumen combines pyro- meaning 'fire' and bitumen meaning 'tar' or 'asphalt'. It is a hard, tar-like material made when natural bitumen is changed by heat deep in rocks, so the name tells you it is 'tar' altered by 'fire'.
