  • Using proportional sampling, the study ensured that each demographic was represented in the survey results according to its proportion in the population.

Examples

  • In proportional sampling, researchers select random samples from each subgroup based on their size in the overall population.

  • The sample of the study was determined according to the random stratified-proportional sampling method.

  • This means that 10% of total pounds were interviewed for both vessels and boats, i.e., proportional sampling.

  • Ideally, under the proportional sampling, the two lines in Figures 2a and 2b should coincide.

  • Under proportional sampling, the lines for L-Vessels and I-Vessels should coincide, and the lines for L-Boats and I-Boats should coincide.

  • Proportional sampling helps to achieve an accurate representation of the population by choosing samples that reflect the sizes of the various subgroups.

Morphology

proportional + sampling

The meaning — selecting samples in proportion to subgroup sizes — is directly and compositionally derived from 'proportional' (in proportion) + 'sampling' (selecting samples). Although somewhat technical, this follows regular semantic combination and similar constructions exist across languages, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents should be able to infer the MWE's meaning.

Etymology

Proportional sampling uses a simple picture: imagine cutting a cake so each group's piece matches its share of the whole cake. Proportional means the right sizes and sampling means taking pieces, so it means taking samples from each group 'in proportion to their size' and keeping all groups fairly represented.
