Morphology

projective = project (semi-transparent) = project + ive

Regular adjective formation from the verb 'project' with suffix '-ive', but the term often has specialized senses (e.g., in mathematics) that may not be obvious to all learners.

Etymology

Projective comes from Latin parts pro- 'forward' and ject 'throw', and you can see the same idea in the common word project. So something projective 'sends' or 'throws' an image or idea forward, which is why projective tests make people 'send out' feelings onto pictures and why projective geometry studies images shown by projection.
