Morphology

postpartum = partum (semi-transparent) = post + partum

The prefix 'post-' (after) is productive and signals a temporal relation, but the stem 'partum' is a non-standalone combining form specialized to childbirth, so the composition is partly inferable but requires medical/Latin knowledge.

Etymology

The word postpartum comes from two parts: post- 'after' and partum 'birth', like the post- in postpone meaning 'after'. So postpartum describes the time right after a mother has a baby.
