Morphology

polling = poll (semi-transparent) = poll + ing

Formed regularly from the verb 'poll' with '-ing', but the computing sense is a specialized technical extension that may not be obvious to all learners.

Etymology

Polling comes from poll, which once meant 'head' and then 'counting heads' to record answers, so it grew to mean 'asking' or 'checking'. In computing, polling is that same idea: it is 'asking' a device or sensor again and again to see if it has new information.
