Pigging for pipeline work comes from the tool called a pig that engineers send through a pipe to clean or check it. A helpful way to remember this is that early pigs scraped and 'rooted' through dirt inside pipes like a real pig in mud, and some people also say the name comes from the letters PIG for 'pipeline inspection device'. So, pigging is the act of sending that tool through a pipeline to remove buildup or inspect it.
