Petaflop is built from the prefix peta- meaning 'a very large number (10^15)' and flop, from the abbreviation FLOP for 'floating-point operation' (think of the common word 'float'). So a petaflop measures how many tiny floating-point math steps a computer can do each second — about one quadrillion operations per second.
