peritoneum = peri + peritone + um
Although 'peri-' means 'around', the rest of the form is a specialized Greek medical formation and the full meaning ('the abdominal lining') is not deducible by a typical B1 learner from the parts.
Etymology
Peritoneum comes from Greek parts peri- 'around' and a root meaning 'to stretch'. So it names the thin layer that 'stretches around' the organs in the belly, like a perimeter goes around a shape.
