The word is transparently formed from 'peri-' meaning around/near and 'menopausal' meaning relating to menopause.
Etymology
Perimenopausal comes from the prefix peri- meaning 'around', the same peri- you see in perimeter, and menopause, which means the 'end of monthly periods'. So perimenopausal describes the time 'around' the start of menopause when hormone changes and symptoms begin.
