The word pedagogue comes from the Greek parts pais and agogos, which mean 'child' and 'leader'. It originally meant a person who 'led' or guided children. That's why pedagogue now means a teacher, often one seen as formal or strict, and the same ped- part appears in pediatrician ('child' doctor).
