Morphology

patellar = patella (semi-transparent) = patella + ar

Formally patella + -ar is a clear adjectival formation, but 'patella' is a technical term (many learners know 'kneecap' instead), so the relation is not fully obvious to a B1 learner.

Etymology

The word patellar comes from the Latin patella, meaning 'small pan' or 'dish', because the kneecap looks like a little dish. So patellar means 'relating to the kneecap'.
