Etymology
Pajama comes into English from Hindi/Urdu and before that from Persian, where pāy meant 'leg' and jāma meant 'clothes', so it originally meant 'leg-clothes'. That's why pajamas are loose trousers and a soft jacket you wear for sleeping and resting.
