Morphology

pacific = pacif + ic

The adjective is built from the non-standalone combining form 'pacif-' + the suffix '-ic'; learners may connect it to 'peace' or 'pacify' but the base form is not a visible standalone English word, so the relation is only partly obvious.

Etymology

Pacific comes from the Latin parts pax 'peace' and facere 'to make', and you can see the same idea in the word pacify. So pacific originally meant 'making peace' and today describes something calm or someone who wants to avoid conflict.
