Etymology
Oxacillin comes from two parts, oxa- and -cillin; -cillin is from penicillin, the mold medicine, and oxa- is a chemistry prefix often meaning 'oxygen' or a 'small change'. So oxacillin is a changed form of penicillin made to resist the bacterial enzymes that destroy ordinary penicillin.
