Morphology
The phrase literally evokes something coming 'out of the box' and being usable immediately, so a learner who knows 'out' and 'box' can often infer a general readiness-from-packaging sense. However, its conventionalized, metaphorical use in software/hardware contexts ('ready to use without setup') is a specialized extension that is not fully predictable from the parts for a B1 learner, so the expression is only partially transparent.
Etymology
Out of the box comes from the simple image of taking a new product out of the box and finding it works at once. That's why out of the box means 'ready to use' without extra setup.
